One of the youngest classical composers in South African history and winner of the iTunes ‘Best Of 2015’ Award for Best Classical Album in 2015, CAROLINE LEISEGANG has raised the bar on classical composition not only in her home country, but in the rest of the musical world with her stunning, world-class debut release 'Øyeblikk' in 2015, and her emotive sophomore album 'Simple Circles' in 2016.
From an early age, Caroline gravitated towards classical music. Learning to play the piano at age 6 and picking up the cello at age 14, she was encouraged by her parents and peers to pursue her passion and she went on to study music at the University of the Witwatersrand.
She decided to leave WITS in her third year and went on to spend two years of studying at Trinity College of Music in London, one of the world’s most prestigious music colleges. At Trinity she studied under Irish composer Deirdre Gribbin (Huddersfield Contemporary Music Fest Prize Winner, Arts Foundation Award Winner) as well as film composer and orchestrator John Ashton Thomas (Ice Age: The Meltdown, X-Men: The Last Stand, Bolt, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Edge of Tomorrow, Maleficent and many more) from whom valuable insight into writing music was gained.
Caroline will be releasing her third album, 'MY BODY OF PRELUDES', later this year after a long battle with severe health issues that have kept her out of sight for more than a year. She has spent the last 13 months living in and out of hospital due to several illnesses which she is on weekly chemotherapy for and is currently waiting for a heart surgery.
This year, CAROLINE comes full circle when she returns to CIRCA ON JELLICOE on 10 May, her first official Johannesburg performance since 2016. ‘Come Full Circle’ is emblematic of the journey Leisegang has been on since her debut at CIRCA in 2016. The audience can expect a special and intimate concert performed by the composer. Tickets are R175 per person and there will be champagne and treats for concert goers.
