ntsiki-pic-2On Sunday the 21st of July 2013 Ntsiki Mazwai, aka The StreetQueen, was detained in Constantia Kloof Lodge in Welkom under allegations of being a prostitute. At the time of detainment the singer had been wearing a thick fleece tracksuit. She was accused of "working there all night".

Mazwai's situation confronts the vast depth of oppressive and derogatory language and its subsequent reflection on women in modern day South Africa. The words we use come to be what we think. I agree with Ntsiki when she states on her facebook page that "The suggestion that black women can only make money by opening their legs is totally Unacceptable.....u look at WOMAN and u see a WHORE?", "WOMAN......its NOT OK for them to call u SLUT/WHORE/CALLGIRL/PROSTITUTE......its just NOT ok!", and "I am NOT your BITCH....I am your SISTER! I am not a SLUT, I am your MOTHER!"

While we can't say this for every man, this attidude of disrespect, whether it is realised or not, is one that must be turned around. Later comments on her feed from male followers stated: "maybe you looked like one." And was riled against pretty quickly.

If any good can come out of the recent Barashenkov and Moosi saga it should be to use the crack that has been opened to properly address this problem. I was at a comedy evening last night and I couldn't help but notice how so many of the comedians that night reduced woman to a boobs to look at, someone to cook food, and their inadequacies at getting laid - I'm pretty sure I know why. I still stand by my right to freedom of expression and joking, but seriously? This attitude is juvenile. My fellow woman and I are not just tits and ass, bearers of food, and sex-mobiles. We are your mothers and your sisters. Treat us with respect. And we in turn shall treat you like brothers and fathers, not dogs (except the loyal, protecting kind), and grant you the same respect.
