Slahla Matende

I was so happy to catch up with Slahla at the artist workshop at Bat Centre last week. He echoed some of my own thoughts and a lot of what I've been hearing from some up and coming artists lately.

Big changes all around I would say - and people coming into their own authenticity is worth celebrating one hundred times over!

I'm so grateful that there are artists out there courageous enough to share this so that we all learn from it.

When you are not imitating someone else, but being you, and not holding back - the full power of you - what is possible?

Just a little on Slahla

Slahla Matende AKA Nkosinathi Lloyd Shangase is a musician from KwaMashu in Durban, South Africa.

Slahla Matende means “convertible” i.e. In English Slahla means “taking off” and Matende means “roof”.

He started taking music seriously in 2007 and his first professional recording was in 2010 which was a Kwaito song. From Kwaito, he moved to Hip Hop.

In May 2016, he released his first compilation of songs in the form of a 15-track mixtape, called “Titanium”.

His musical influences are Tupac, Shaba Ranks and TP. Particularly Tupac, because Slahla believes in the struggle and Tupac fought the struggle musically. You will often see Slahla caption a picture on social media with the words “The revolution will not be televised”.

He has created a new genre which is a mix of Rhythm and Blues, Hip Hop, R&B, Dance Hall and Pop, which will be heard on his new album 'Refreshingly Different'.

Slahla has also worked in many companies which include Telkom, Unilever and Discovery Health.  He became a full-time musician in 2016.
