Since the release of his debut EP 'The Calling', 22-year-old multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, James Deacon, has been making his alternative pop prowess known all over radio and streaming.
Deacon’s 6-week stint at #1 on the 5FM Indie Chart, high profile playlist inclusions across Apple Music and Spotify, and prominent features on Indie Shuffle, CLASH, Earmilk and Record of the Day, to name but a few, culminated in him being invited to perform at Musexpo, the lauded international music and media conference, in Los Angeles in 2020.
But rather than let the grass grow under his feet, Deacon decidedly continues to churn out the chart-toppers. His latest single, 'HERO aka Rich' is a frank foray into the bonds of brotherhood is inspiring, to say the very least.
“This song is a very important one for me. I wrote this song about my relationship with my brother that went from an inseparable bond and a decade worth of good times and life-shaping events to an abrupt end in a fiery mess of emotions,” Deacon explains candidly when questions about the song’s lyrical weight.

Deacon’s exploration of the age-old idea that you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family, is brave but also, backed by a slickly-produced, banging beat that’s peppered by a blues-rooted guitar line.
His studio exploits with Paul Gala (Bad Future Records) continue to yield the tastiest of fruits and this latest single reinforces the team’s winning single streak.
“The track has changed about 100 times since I first wrote it,” Deacon begins to declare. “The longer you sit with a song that really means something, the more it will adapt and change and take on a life of its own, and in this case, if I played you the first draft you wouldn’t recognise it. The beauty of this, for me, is that in our live shows we play this song more in the style that the song started off in. So if you know this track from the live show, you will be pleasantly surprised by this one.”
