Nigerian spoken word artist Ndukwe Onuoha’s ‘Genesis’ is part poem, part song and gently tugs the heart-strings with humility, honesty, and optimism.

Having played at local art spaces in both Lagos and Berlin and with a few festival performances under his belt Onuoha is quietly making a well-deserved name for himself.

Listen to ‘Genesis’ below!

Starting acapella, Onuoha outlines a complex family situation, emotions threatening to break through his rich, matter-of-fact voice. When the music comes in, a composition made up of traditional African instruments packed with complexity, it gives the wordsmith’s verses a sense of urgency tinged with optimism.

As mournful background vocals swirl around him, Onuoha speaks of life and death, tragedy and rebirth and the never-ending battle of self-improvement, his words carefully chosen and his phrasing precisely planned as he spreads a message of strength and perseverance.

I’ve always thought that spoken-word is an underrated genre and Ndukwe Onuoha’s ‘Genesis’ is proof of the kind of power it can have. The honesty and courage he shows as he opens up about his life is deeply moving and will hopefully serve as inspiration for anyone at the end of their tether.
