In the vibrant and ever-evolving world of music, X-Sirenn is working to emerge as a compelling voice in hip-hop. Hailing from the Vaal 016 city triangle, he started rapping at just 11 years old, embarking on a journey of growth, resilience, and a commitment to staying true to his roots. Drawing inspiration from local greats to global icons, X-Sirenn aims to craft a sound that is unique and reflective of his personal journey. With the release of his new single and video, ‘1 ToucH,’ X-Sirenn sat down with Underground Press to discuss his evolution as an artist, the challenges he faces, and his vision for the future.
Hip-hop has a rich history that often reflects local narratives and social issues. How do your roots and experiences influence your music? Are there specific sounds or traditions you incorporate most into your tracks?
My roots and experiences haven't always been pleasant, and they deeply influence my music. I create from whatever situation I find myself in, drawing inspiration from the challenges and circumstances I face. I stay humble and use whatever resources are available to me to craft my beats and songs.
Your music blends elements of global hip-hop with unique local flavours. How has your style evolved over time, and what do you think sets your sound apart from other South African hip-hop artists?
My style has evolved significantly since 2021. My vocals have become more aggressive and cleaner in sound. What sets my music apart from other South African artists is its distinctive sound and the language I use in my lyrics - something people may not be familiar with now but will recognise as I gain more exposure.
Hip-hop is known for its powerful storytelling. What are some of the key themes or messages you hope to convey through your lyrics, particularly in your new single ‘1 ToucH’?
The message I'm conveying in '1 ToucH' is to always be resilient in everything you do. I'm also sending out the message that it doesn't matter who you are - if I can reach these heights, there's nothing stopping others from doing the same.
Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have become crucial in the music industry. How have these platforms influenced your approach to releasing music and connecting with your audience?
TikTok and Instagram are incredibly fast ways to reach a massive audience in today's generation. These platforms allow me to connect with a wider audience and gain new fans globally. Social media has influenced how I release music by helping me reach potential listeners and consumers around the world.
You’ve collaborated with several talented artists. Are there any South African or international artists you dream of collaborating with in the future? What would you like to create together?
I would love to collaborate with Drake or Chris Brown. It would be amazing to create a solid album or EP with at least 12 songs, along with around four music videos and some behind-the-scenes content to share with fans.
The music industry is known for its challenges, especially for emerging artists. What are some of the biggest obstacles you’ve faced, and how have you managed to overcome them?
Balancing finances and finding time for my family has been challenging. The only way to get through these tough times is to stay grounded in what I do and remain as persistent and patient as possible.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for the next few years? How do you envision your music evolving, and what impact do you hope to make in the South African music industry?
For the longevity of my career, I aim to achieve international success and evolve into an all-around artist who can blend hip-hop with different music genres. In the South African music industry, I hope to create a unique blueprint that reaches millions and changes how people perceive what South African hip-hop and X-Sirenn have to offer.
Artists often use music to document their personal growth. How has your personal journey influenced your music, and can you share a specific experience that has significantly shaped your artistic path?
Before stepping into my professional era in 2019 and starting to rap more seriously at 16, I was a football player. I had to quit after someone close to me passed away. The hardships I've faced have shaped me into who I am today.
How do you connect with younger audiences through your music, and what message do you want to share with them?
To my younger audience, I want to share that you can always become the person you dream of being. There are no limits when you aim high. Always stay humble and believe in what you do, because eventually, your passion will support you and take care of you.
Besides making music, are there other passions or projects you’re involved in or would like to explore? How do you balance these interests with your music career?
Honestly, right now, music is my main focus, along with being an entrepreneur in my business. If I were to explore other passions, it would be to invest in property and own everything related to it, or perhaps get back into sports, like football.
Finally, what’s the most unusual or unexpected place you've ever written a song or come up with lyrics? Was there a particular inspiration behind it?
Yes, there was an unusual experience where I had to write and record in a room that didn’t have enough oxygen. I didn't have much choice but to stay in there, and I managed to write at least two songs and even record them in that space.
