Johannesburg, 22 May 2025 – In a move that pushes accessibility tech into public retail spaces, Eastgate Shopping Centre has partnered with Convo South Africa to launch a real-time South African Sign Language (SASL) interpreting service for Deaf and hard-of-hearing shoppers. Coinciding with International Accessibility Day, this initiative highlights both the social responsibility and progressive tech integration that local public spaces urgently need.
Sign Language Support At The Tap Of A Phone
The system is simple: shoppers scan a QR code at customer service points, and within seconds, they're connected to a professional SASL interpreter via video call — entirely free of charge. The rollout marks a powerful step in removing barriers for the 4 million-plus Deaf and hard-of-hearing South Africans, many of whom routinely navigate inaccessible public spaces.
“Inclusivity should not be an afterthought,” says Saadiyah Kahn, Eastgate’s GM. “It’s about creating spaces where every person is seen and heard.”
Tech That Actually Serves The Community
Convo’s platform extends beyond SASL, offering interpreting services for English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu, and Sesotho via smartphones, tablets, and laptops. The partnership signals more than a token gesture — it’s a necessary upgrade to the way shopping centres and public spaces serve diverse communities.
Raising The Bar For Malls Nationwide
As one of Johannesburg’s biggest malls, Eastgate’s move should challenge other centres to follow suit. With over 200 stores, restaurants, entertainment spots, and lifestyle venues, it’s setting a precedent in championing meaningful, tech-forward inclusivity.
