KwaZulu-Natal, 15 July 2025: Gateway Theatre of Shopping is once again stepping up for Mandela Day with two thoughtful initiatives aimed at improving the lives of young children in the province. Echoing the 2025 national theme, “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity,” this year’s focus is on essential early development and nutrition.

Drop & Donate for The Baby Home
Building on last year’s successful “Change in Action” campaign, Gateway is inviting shoppers to support The Baby Home, a safe haven for abandoned and vulnerable babies in Durban North, Umhlanga. Until 31 July, the public can drop off baby food items—including infant formula, purity, cereals, teething biscuits, and snack items — at the mall’s central Information Desk. Alternatively, donations can be delivered directly to 11 Pigeonwood Close. These contributions will provide six babies in care with critical nutritional support during their early development.

Hands-On Action on Mandela Day
On 18 July, Gateway, in partnership with Nation Builder, invites the public to participate in “Play with Purpose”, a 67-minute volunteer activity hosted at the Atrium, Parkade B (Level PG) near Entrance 5. Participants will help create batches of colourful, child-safe playdough to be packaged and distributed to local Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres. The initiative offers a practical, hands-on opportunity for individuals, families, and businesses to give their time and effort for a cause that directly benefits early learning initiatives in the region.

Community at Heart
For Gateway, Mandela Day is more than symbolic—it’s about creating a tangible, lasting impact. These initiatives give the public simple yet meaningful ways to contribute towards positive change, reinforcing Gateway’s role as a caring, community-first destination.
