Strong demand has prompted three additional Semi-Soet performances

With the return of Afrikaans musical theatre to Montecasino’s Teatro now less than two weeks away, it seems audiences are already making their voices heard — and they want more.

Several performances of Semi-Soet – die musiekblyspel, which opens in Johannesburg on 4 September, are already nearing capacity. In response to the demand, AfriForum and Inhoud Huis Musiek have added three more opportunities for audiences to catch the production, including performances on Heritage Day and the final weekend of September.

More Shows Added Following Strong Audience Demand

The additional performances include Thursday, 24 September at 11:00, Saturday, 26 September at 15:00, and Sunday, 27 September at 13:00.

For a production returning to the Teatro after more than a decade, the response suggests there is still a sizeable appetite for Afrikaans musical theatre on one of Johannesburg’s major stages.

“We are incredibly grateful for the excitement surrounding the return of an Afrikaans production to the Teatro at Montecasino after more than 10 years. We are deeply thankful to every person who is helping to secure the future of Afrikaans musicals on a national stage such as the Teatro,” says Jacomien de Wet of Inhoud Huis Musiek.

Semi-Soet Is Returning With A Bigger Teatro Production

Behind the scenes, rehearsals are already well underway as the production prepares for its return.

According to Johan Vorster of Inhoud Huis Musiek, the Teatro version has been specifically adapted for the venue, with the production receiving a significant creative boost.

“Rehearsals for the production’s return are in full swing. The team is working hard to present Semi-Soet on the Teatro stage on a bigger and better scale than ever before. The new Teatro run has been specially adapted for the venue, with new creative elements, larger-scale visuals, brand-new songs, surprises and a bigger cast,” says Vorster.

That means audiences familiar with the original production can expect some fresh elements when Semi-Soet takes over the Teatro.

Familiar Faces Return To The Stage

Bobby van Jaarsveld and Anel Alexander return as JP and Jaci, the couple at the heart of the story.

Their characters pretend to be the perfect couple, only to discover that love has a habit of appearing where you least expect it.

The returning cast also includes Zöricke Snyman and Philip Schnetler, both Naledi nominees for their work in the production, alongside Nadia Beukes, who returns to a stage she knows well.

From Romantic Film To Live Musical

The story began with the popular romantic film of the same name, but the stage production expands that story through an original musical format.

With music by Vorster and De Wet, Semi-Soet combines humour, romance, music, and plenty of energy for the theatre.

There is also new music for the latest season, including Rek Strek Baba by Marcelle Peach, which has already been released across digital platforms.

More Opportunities To Experience Semi-Soet

The newly announced performances give audiences more chances to experience the production at the Teatro, particularly those who may have missed out on tickets for performances already approaching capacity.

The question now is whether the additional shows will satisfy demand — or simply demonstrate just how hungry audiences remain for large-scale Afrikaans musical productions.
