Acclaimed South African multi-instrumentalist Guy Buttery has released the second single, "I Know This Place," from his upcoming album, Orchestrations. This track offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the unparalleled sonic journey of the project, set to release on the 20th of February 2025.

"I Know This Place" is a groundbreaking composition that places the mbira, a traditional African thumb piano, at its core, entwined with a symphonic cascade of strings. The track unites a stellar lineup of global collaborators, including celebrated classical guitarist Derek Gripper, South African percussionist Jonno Sweetman, and Italy-based innovator Pino Forastiere, who lends the ethereal tones of his custom 16-string "lab-guitar." This unusual yet harmonious pairing of instruments unveils an uncharted musical terrain, expanding the boundaries of orchestral and world music.

Buttery’s commitment to artistic exploration is evident in every note of Orchestrations. The album, 12 years in the making, is a monumental reflection of his insatiable curiosity and meticulous artistry. Featuring contributions from luminaries across ten countries—spanning Kaki King in New York, Madala Kunene in Durban, and Mudassir Khan in New Delhi—the 14-track collection is held together by the sweeping arrangements of Chris Letcher, which gives the album its cohesive yet expansive character.

Reflecting on the creative process, Buttery describes the album as a journey that has spanned moments of euphoria, frustration, and profound discovery. “It’s been a cycle of creation and destruction, but I’ve learned to embrace the madness. Orchestrations feels like the culmination of countless threads coming together, and 'I Know This Place' is a perfect encapsulation of that spirit.”

The journey to Orchestrations began in 2012 when Buttery performed his compositions with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. The experience marked the start of a decade-long deep dive into orchestral experimentation, leading to a body of work he describes as a “magnum opus.”

'I Know This Place' is now available on all major streaming platforms. With its rich textures and innovative instrumentation, the single sets the stage for the full album’s release, promising listeners an immersive and transformative musical experience.
